Symposium
At the invitation of the Supreme Council for Culture, the Tarek Waly Center Architecture and Heritage participated on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, in a symposium entitled “Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrassah: Between Architecture, Novels, and Photography.” Dr. Tarek Waly delivered his speech during the discussion session entitled “A Vision for Extrapolation the Architecture of Sultan Hassan Madrassah.” During the session, he discussed the history of the Madrassah, its establishment, and what historians, archaeologists, and architects have written about it. He also discussed the various dimensions of the madrassah, including location, history, architecture, and design, moving from that to interpreting the engineering systems that the madrassah’s architecture carries.
The attendees also discussed the importance of Sultan Hassan Madrassah as a landmark of Mamluk Islamic architecture, as well as what the mosque represents in the Arab city. The event also featured novelist Dr. Reem Bassiouni, Professor of English Literature at the American University in Cairo, who spoke about “The Inspiration of the Mamluk Trilogy: Sultan Hassan and the Novel,” as well as photographer Fadi Qudsi, who spoke about “Formation in Sultan Hassan School.” The event concluded with an open dialogue with the attendees, including a comparison between the current role of the mosque in Egyptian society and the environment, as well as contemporary mosque architecture.
