National Organization of Urban Harmony
In cooperation between the Tarek Waly Center Architecture and Heritage, the National Organization for Urban Harmony, UNESCO Cairo Office, and the Rare Books Library at the American University in Cairo, this celebration was launched to mark the start of work on the project “The Rehabilitation of the New Gourna Village Center - Luxor”. The event was held at the headquarters of the National Organization of Urban Harmony on the evening of Monday, November 13, 2017. The event began with a seminar about the project, in which Engineer Mohamed Abu Saada, head of the National Organization for Urban Harmony, and Mr. Ghaith Fariz, Director of the Cairo Office at UNESCO, as well as Dr. Tarek Waly – the project’s consultant - gave a presentation on the rehabilitation methodology and the current status of the village and its building. The collaborating parties organized an exhibition of photographs showing the village of Gourna at the time of its establishment - from the archive of the architect Hassan Fathy - and photographs of the current situation of the village center and the deterioration it suffers from, in addition to a presentation of the plan and the final vision of the village after rehabilitation, as well as photographs documenting the start of work in the first phase of the rehabilitation of the Khan building, which began in October 2017.
