In response to the invitation of the Sudan Architecture Forum, the Tarek Waly Center Architecture and Heritage participated in the celebration and introduction of mudbrick architecture, which was held from January 28 to February 7, which was organized in cooperation between the Sudan Architecture Forum, the Department of Scientific Research at the University of Khartoum and the European Union. The first events were held in Khartoum with The International Conference on Mudbrick Architecture, which hosted a group of experts in the fields of architecture, design, heritage, archaeology and culture. The conference was followed by the activities of the Karma Expo, which is an international cultural festival aimed at reviving, understanding, spreading and celebrating mudbrick architecture in Sudan and the world, which was held in the Northern State in the ancient city of Kerma from January 31 to February 7, 2019. The Karma Expo represented a platform for presenting, discussing and exchanging global experiences on the latest developments in the field of mudbrick construction and included a number of scientific, cultural, experimental and archaeological activities. The center participated in the events with a lecture and exhibition on clay architecture in Egypt, as well as presenting a summary of the center's experiences in this field.
The Center participated in the events with a lecture and exhibition entitled: "Mudbrick Architecture in Egypt Historic Review & Showcases from Tarek Waly Center Architecture & Heritage". The presentation included a historical overview of the mudbrick architecture in Egypt and examples of it from different eras since the ancient Egyptian, Coptic and Islamic civilizations, all the way to the mudbrick architecture in the modern era. The show models of the popular mudbrick architecture in various areas of Egypt, as well as the mudbrick architecture of the Orientalists. The lecture provided a brief presentation of the most important experiences of the pioneers of Egyptian architecture, such as Dr. Tawfek Abdel Gawad and Sayed Karim in building with mudbrick, and of course the unique experience of the pioneers of mudbrick architecture in Egypt, Ramses Wissa Wassef and Hassan Fathy. The lecture concluded with a presentation of the experiences of the Tarek Waly Center in the fields of design and construction with mudbrick, as well as our experience in rehabilitating the works of architect Hassan Fathy at the Stopplaere rest-house in Luxor and the Khan building in New Gourna Village in Luxor.
Most of the events constituted an open dialogue between experts and specialists about historical and contemporary mudbrick architecture in a number of countries in the world, and groups of Sudanese architecture students participated in it. The Sudanese people, as well as an exhibition of distinguished photographs of the mudbrick architecture. The exhibition met with a visible interaction from the local community of Karma, who expressed through their interaction the rooting of the popular mud architecture in their memory and conscience.
