Faculty members of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE) Faculty of Architecture, invited Dr. Tarek Waly to participate as a jury member for the competition for the rehabilitation of the buildings of the New Gourna Village in Luxor. The competition was the culmination of an international workshop initiated by the Faculty of Architecture at the university in January 2015-2017 for graduate students in architecture and fieldwork in Egypt, which was held in cooperation with: The Eötvös Loránd University Research Workshop, the Higher Technological Institute Cairo, and a number of architects. The main topic was to research the multi-layered cultural landscape of historical architecture in Egypt. The workshop program resulted in collaboration with 25 Cairo students, in studying and documenting the architecture of the New Qurna Village of the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy. Budapest students in both Luxor and Kharga Oasis also began evaluation and documentation of the most important existed and still existing memories about the life of the architect Hassan Fathy (in New Gourna / West Luxor) and the study and documentation of the theater, the mosque, the khan, Fathy's house, the market. Also, in the village of Baris in the Kharga Oasis, the study and documentation were carried out: the village workshop, the market, the khan. The architectural competition for the rehabilitation of the buildings of the new village of Al-Gourna came as an applied continuation of the workshop.
