Panel discussion and seminar during
ICCROM’s Regional Office for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage (ICCROM-Sharjah), in collaboration with the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, is organising the 4th Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage, which will discuss the notion of the culture of Omran (baukultur) and explore the role of communities in building cultural heritage resilience. This Forum served as an opportunity to highlight the ways in which a community can safeguard cultural heritage from the threats it faces, highlighting the role that culture can play as a tool for resilience-building and preservation of historical environments – before, during and after any type of crisis.
Dr. Tarek Walz, the Center’s Chairman and Founder, participated in the forum during its first session: The Concept of Omran Culture, which included discussions between a number of specialists, including Dr. Tarek Waly, Dr. Wael Samhouri, Dr. Bastian Varotsikos, Dr. Khaled Kasher, and the session was moderated by Ms. Maysoun Azzam. Dr. Waly’s participation entitled “Al-Omran in our Arab Culture: Renewing the Arab Discourse,” in which he discussed the concept of Omran, the cognitive approach, and the evidence for the methodology of understanding Omran theories in our Arab culture through two axes. The first is the intellectual-philosophical axis, in which he discussed the visions of Al-Farabi, Ibn Rushd, and Ibn Sina about Al-Omran. The second axis is the historical-political axis, in which he presented the theories of Miskawayh, Al-Tartushi, and Ibn Khaldun.
